What is Mobile-geddon?

On 21st April 2015 Google released a new algorithm change that would boost the rankings of mobile friendly websites and penalise those that were not. Whilst Google described the algorithm change as an ‘expansion of their ranking signals which would now take into account mobile friendliness’, SEO experts feared the worse and concocted the apocalyptic term ‘Mobile-geddon’.

Why is Mobile Friendly important?

Google, like any other business, wants to keep its customers happy. To do this Google must continue to offer high quality results for its customers search queries, no matter what device its customers choose to access the internet on.

A recent study by the Office of National Statistics has found that internet usage in the UK via mobile has continued to sore. In the past 4 years alone, usage has doubled going from an impressive 24% of the population in 2010 to a whopping 58% in 2014. Google must now, more than ever, ensure they accommodate the growing increase in mobile internet users.

How can I see if my Google rankings have suffered?

The best way to see a change in your Google rankings is to use the Google Webmasters Tool.

  1. Log in to Google Webmaster tools
  2. Select ‘Search Traffic’ and select ‘Search Analytics’
  3. Deselect the tick box labelled ‘Clicks’ and select the tick box labelled ‘Position’
  4. Is there a change in the graph stemming from 21st April?
